See Your Options If You Lose Job-Based Health Insurance

People with coverage through a job

If you lose job-based health insurance, you have 2 main options: – Enroll in a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace – Sign up for COBRA coverage

1. Sign up for COBRA coverage

After losing your work, COBRA coverage enables you to pay to maintain your employer-provided health insurance for a set period of time (usually 18 months).

1. Sign up for COBRA coverage

Usually, you are responsible for paying both the whole premium and a little administrative cost.

2. Enroll in a Marketplace plan

You can sign up for a Marketplace plan if you lose your employment-based health insurance for any reason (including quitting your job or being fired).

2. Enroll in a Marketplace plan

In order to enroll in coverage for the remainder of the year, you will be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.

Do I need to provide proof that I lost insurance through my job?

You might require documentation that your work caused you to lose your health insurance. You'll receive an eligibility notice when you submit an application for Marketplace coverage.
