10 Ways to Get a Raise without Asking

If you are like most people, you would probably like to get paid more for the hours you log at your job.  However, no one likes the idea of asking for a raise. Fortunately, there are tactics you can use to earn more money without formally requesting it. Here are ten ways to get a raise without asking:

1. Go to work consistently

If you want to get paid more, you have to show up regularly. Now is not the time to take extra vacation days. Try to avoid taking sick days if it is at all possible. Out of sight can mean out of mind to your boss. That is not a good thing when you are hoping for a raise.

2. Arrive promptly

Tardiness can make you seem unprofessional and uninterested in your position. No boss is going to give more money to someone who is not putting in a full day’s work. Arrive promptly at the beginning of your shift to appear excited about helping the company.

3. Demonstrate leadership

Whenever the opportunity arises, always make sure to act like a leader. Whether you are taking the lead on an important project or just scheduling the daily meeting, you will show initiative in the workplace. That can go a long way toward getting you the raise you have been hoping for.

4. Volunteer to do what no one else will

There are some work assignments that nearly everyone tries to avoid. Instead of passing on that stack of proposals or skipping those spreadsheets, use unpleasant chores as a chance to show you are willing to do anything for your company. You will show loyalty and prove you are worth a bigger paycheck.

5. Do more than what is expected

There is nothing employers love more than employees who are willing to go the extra mile. You may be hesitant to ask for a raise, but do not be afraid to ask for more work. It is very likely that more money will follow.

6. Bring in more customers

Whether you work in sales or not, there is a good chance you can help your company gain more clients. Hand out business cards at places you frequent and refer friends and family members. Do anything you can to generate new business. You never know when your name might get a mention in the process.

7. Give compliments to those above you

Everyone likes to be complimented for doing a job well. That includes your supervisor, manager and even your boss.  If you have the opportunity, it never hurts to offer a little praise to someone with a higher ranking.

This is one instance where flattery may get you somewhere. As long as you do not go overboard, compliments can be very beneficial to your quest for a raise.

8. Learn some new skills

Technology has had an impact on almost every field. Stay competitive with newer employees by learning some new skills and studying recent changes in programs. Your boss will likely be pleased that you are trying to stay at the top of your game.

9. Have someone else praise you

If you have a supervisor or team leader that likes you and your work, you may be able to use it to your advantage.  He or she might be willing to put in a good word with someone in a position of true power.  Ask a lower manager about the possibility of a recommendation and you could end up with a bigger paycheck in the near future.

10. Become essential to your employer

Sometimes becoming especially skilled at a particular task can help you earn more money. Find your niche within the company and your boss may fear losing you to a competitor. Think about what you do particularly well and try to highlight that skill as much as possible.

Asking for a raise can be a bit intimidating. You might be afraid that you will be turned down or fired. Luckily, there are ways of getting a pay increase without formally requesting it. With these easy ideas, you can get a raise in no time at all.
